Breast Cancer

UncategorizedLorely Meza1 Comment

In the last month breast cancer has hit home.  Statistically it makes sense. 5 in every 10 women will get breast cancer and I have been waiting for it to hit.  It hit in spades in my family.  Cancer has been something that has weighed on my heart for years and I fear it so.  On my side, we have 6 adult women and my 2 daughters on my inlaw side we have 5 women, me and three little ladies.  So statistically, over 5 of us should get breast cancer.  I am angry and sickened by it all.  I hate cancer and hate that it has infiltrated my family. Breast cancer awareness month

My grandma, Louanne Peyton was diagnosed in September 2014 and last week went through a double mascentomy to remove her breast cancer.  Grammy Lou is the matriarch of my family and deserves the title in every way. She is loving, patient, non biased, fun, current and a lady in every sense of the term.  I've never had a conversation with my grandma that hasn't stuck with me in some way.  She is wise in a way that you only dream your grandma would be.  She is lovely in a way that her outer beauty pales in comparison too.  She is everything that empowers a woman to be well read, womanly and smart in a way that only a woman of 83 can be.  She gets me and gets life.  I can talk to her about my worst fears and my most frivolous moments and she is steadfast.  She laughs at herself and finds joy in everything. We tease that she lives her life with rose colored glasses or in a romance novel and I'm okay with that philosophy. If I become a fraction of my grandma I would be lucky.

beck

My aunt Becky is in every word categorized as a saint. She is the most gentle person I've ever met.  I don't mean weak, my aunt is anything but weak.  Her spirit is reserved and gentle and she sits on the sidelines.  She on the other hand, can stand up for herself.  She can be fierce and defend herself like nothing I've ever seen.  She is brilliant and beyond sharp. She surprises me with her strength and brilliance.  She is the steadfast rock of her family and is always serving others.  Maybe to a fault.  She loves my babies like her own. We have the sweetest memories of my girls playing with Beck singing and dancing to silly Sound of Music songs. I have the fondest memories of being in college and randomly visiting my cousin .  Her home would always smell of home cooked meals and the second you walked in you felt her love.  Her unwavering smile made you feel as if everything would be alright.  That smile was my home away from home. Her beauty is simple as she likes it but nothing less than stunning.

Both of these special woman of mine have been diagnosed only two weeks apart with breast cancer.  I'm helpless in knowing what to do and how to help.  The best I can do is spread the awareness and love on my family.  Some organizations close to me have begun their own campaigns for breast cancer.  Please support their efforts and please support my effort in trying to do my part in battling breast cancer.

Breast Cancer has it's sights on every 5 in 10 women. That is 50%! Our odds are not in our favor.  Let's ban together as women, providers, glue to our families, wives, mothers, friends confidants etc etc etc. and fight the good fight.  Research and self checking is all we can do at this point.  Please donate to the research here.  Please donate on behalf of these two women in my life that have impacted me in more ways that can be discussed.

Pins of the week - Life with Lipstick On

Happy October!!! Yay Fall is here!!  We are still waiting for the "official" start of fall here in So Cal.  It's supposed to be 100 degrees this weekend!  NOOOO!  Well, a girl can dream of fall weather and treats baking in the oven.  Cheers to the Pin Party of the week.

I dream of lazy mornings with my funny and a good book in a light filled bedroom like this with nowhere to go.

Nothing better in the whole world than belly laughs like this bundle has.

I put some major love on my pantry a couple years ago and love it's functionality and prettiness but man I could live in this one happily.

Simple neutrals are calling my name this fall.  I can't wait to cozy up in boyfriend jeans and oversized sweaters like one of my favorite bloggers Kat from With Love from Kat.

We have a million apples from our recent apple picking trip, and this gorgeous Bourbon Apple Cider sounds like the perfect adult way to put them to good use.

Apple Turnovers

FoodLorely MezaComment

Peyton and I visited Riley's Farm for a little fall outing of apple picking.  We got a bunch of apples and I needed the perfect exuse to use them all up.  I love apple season and love how yummy the house smells when I bake up something yummy.  I asked the bakers at Riley's Farm what their secret was to their amazing apple pies.  They told me it was all in the crust and they were right!  It's flaky and buttery perfection.  I decided to make apple turnovers for our sweet treat and bring back the flaky gorgeous crust of Riley's Farm's bakery.   I love turnovers because they are flaky and delicious and so easy. Even better, they aren't frowned upon as a breakfast treat.  Winning! Here is my super easy and quick recipe for our sweet, delicious Apple Turnover.

Nestled in the hills of Yucaipa are the sweetest apple orchards.  Riley's Farm is our favorite and always our kick off to the fall season.  It's colonial charm and beautiful setting keep us coming back.  Not to mention their mouthwatering apple pie! Peyton and I visited the farm while Capri was at school and had the best afternoon adventure.  Kacee from Life with Lipstick On Kacee from Life with Lipstick On

We picked up some treats to take home from their adorable shop.  We sipped fresh apple cider, read a little about the history of the farm and grabbed our favorite homemade jam. Kacee from Life with Lipstick On Kacee from Life with Lipstick On

We learned that Granny Smith apples were great for making pies with and can't wait to try to make our own with the apples we picked.  Kacee from Life with Lipstick onKacee from Life with Lipstick On Kacee from Life with Lipstick on

Q.What is the first thing you think of when you think of stripes?

A.  Stripes for me are a fun way to make a stylish statement!

Q. Are you into mixing patterns with stripes? If so, what is your favorite go to?

A. Stripes are so versatile and can come in different sizes, colors and styles so it's a great pattern to mix and match. I love mixing stripes with just about anything but my favorite would have to be a classic black and white stripe with just a little pop of color.

Q. How are you planning on styling your stripes this fall season?

A. Fall is the perfect time of the year to play around with stripes! You can wear a simple striped scarf, sweater or top to add some dimension to your look. Just keep in mind your proportions and shape to appropriately use stripes to flatter your frame.

I am so excited to share with you the fabulous Fallon from Sage + Sparkle, New York based fashion and lifestyle blog.  I love Fallon's fun and feminine take on fashion and I was excited to get her take on stripes.sage+sparkle_stripes_1 Q.What is the first thing you think of when you think of stripes?

A.  When I think of stripes, the first thing that comes to mind is that stripes can be such a flattering pattern, as long as you know how to wear them.sage+sparkle_stripes_2

Q. Are you into mixing patterns with stripes?  If so, what is your favorite go to?

A. Yes. I love mixing stripes with just about anything - from leopard, to plaid, to floral, anything goes - as long as you pay attention to proportion. You always want to make sure that when mixing patterns, one is a larger scale than the other. On the other hand, I do love a good black + white stripe paired with a solid pop color.sage+sparkle_stripes_4

Q. How are you planning on styling your stripes this fall season?

A.  This Fall Season, I'm excited about playing with sheer stripes and of course, layering! For fall, I tend to stay away from the typically navy + white stripes and try to incorporate more muted, deeper tones - and of course black + white stripes, which work for any season.

I veto the old fashion rule that you can't wear white after Labor Day.  White is perfect any season.  It adds a freshness to fall tans or the richness of the jewel tones of winter. This sweater is my first cashmere and man I understand why it's such  staple.  It's rich color, buttery softness and beautiful shape makes it worth every dime. [show_shopthepost_widget id="261067"]
