Breast Cancer

UncategorizedLorely Meza1 Comment

In the last month breast cancer has hit home.  Statistically it makes sense. 5 in every 10 women will get breast cancer and I have been waiting for it to hit.  It hit in spades in my family.  Cancer has been something that has weighed on my heart for years and I fear it so.  On my side, we have 6 adult women and my 2 daughters on my inlaw side we have 5 women, me and three little ladies.  So statistically, over 5 of us should get breast cancer.  I am angry and sickened by it all.  I hate cancer and hate that it has infiltrated my family. Breast cancer awareness month

My grandma, Louanne Peyton was diagnosed in September 2014 and last week went through a double mascentomy to remove her breast cancer.  Grammy Lou is the matriarch of my family and deserves the title in every way. She is loving, patient, non biased, fun, current and a lady in every sense of the term.  I've never had a conversation with my grandma that hasn't stuck with me in some way.  She is wise in a way that you only dream your grandma would be.  She is lovely in a way that her outer beauty pales in comparison too.  She is everything that empowers a woman to be well read, womanly and smart in a way that only a woman of 83 can be.  She gets me and gets life.  I can talk to her about my worst fears and my most frivolous moments and she is steadfast.  She laughs at herself and finds joy in everything. We tease that she lives her life with rose colored glasses or in a romance novel and I'm okay with that philosophy. If I become a fraction of my grandma I would be lucky.

beck

My aunt Becky is in every word categorized as a saint. She is the most gentle person I've ever met.  I don't mean weak, my aunt is anything but weak.  Her spirit is reserved and gentle and she sits on the sidelines.  She on the other hand, can stand up for herself.  She can be fierce and defend herself like nothing I've ever seen.  She is brilliant and beyond sharp. She surprises me with her strength and brilliance.  She is the steadfast rock of her family and is always serving others.  Maybe to a fault.  She loves my babies like her own. We have the sweetest memories of my girls playing with Beck singing and dancing to silly Sound of Music songs. I have the fondest memories of being in college and randomly visiting my cousin .  Her home would always smell of home cooked meals and the second you walked in you felt her love.  Her unwavering smile made you feel as if everything would be alright.  That smile was my home away from home. Her beauty is simple as she likes it but nothing less than stunning.

Both of these special woman of mine have been diagnosed only two weeks apart with breast cancer.  I'm helpless in knowing what to do and how to help.  The best I can do is spread the awareness and love on my family.  Some organizations close to me have begun their own campaigns for breast cancer.  Please support their efforts and please support my effort in trying to do my part in battling breast cancer.

One Hope  has been at the forefront of their proceeds going to all different organizations but their breast cancer proceeds stand front and center this month.  "The Gateway for Cancer Research is committed to funding innovative cancer research studies that can help today’s cancer patients feel better, live longer or be cured. Thanks to generous underwriting by Cancer Treatment Centers of America®, 99 cents of every dollar Gateway receives helps to fund phase I and phase II cancer clinical trials at leading research institutions all over the world. Since 1991 Gateway has supported more than 120 clinical trials and funded millions in leading-edge research, including blending the best of conventional and complementary/alternative therapies."

Breast Cancer has it's sights on every 5 in 10 women. That is 50%! Our odds are not in our favor.  Let's ban together as women, providers, glue to our families, wives, mothers, friends confidants etc etc etc. and fight the good fight.  Research and self checking is all we can do at this point.  Please donate to the research here.  Please donate on behalf of these two women in my life that have impacted me in more ways that can be discussed.

Striped with guest blogger Sage + Sparkle

UncategorizedLorely MezaComment

I am so excited to share with you the fabulous Fallon from Sage + Sparkle, New York based fashion and lifestyle blog.  I love Fallon's fun and feminine take on fashion and I was excited to get her take on stripes.sage+sparkle_stripes_1 Q.What is the first thing you think of when you think of stripes?

A.  When I think of stripes, the first thing that comes to mind is that stripes can be such a flattering pattern, as long as you know how to wear them.sage+sparkle_stripes_2

Q. Are you into mixing patterns with stripes?  If so, what is your favorite go to?

A. Yes. I love mixing stripes with just about anything - from leopard, to plaid, to floral, anything goes - as long as you pay attention to proportion. You always want to make sure that when mixing patterns, one is a larger scale than the other. On the other hand, I do love a good black + white stripe paired with a solid pop color.sage+sparkle_stripes_4

Q. How are you planning on styling your stripes this fall season?

A.  This Fall Season, I'm excited about playing with sheer stripes and of course, layering! For fall, I tend to stay away from the typically navy + white stripes and try to incorporate more muted, deeper tones - and of course black + white stripes, which work for any season.

Back to school: Teacher's gifts

UncategorizedLorely MezaComment

It's back to school for Capri next week and my little Peyton's first year of preschool!  Capri's teacher this year is a big gardener and so we thought we would put together a little window sill plant gift for her as a back to school present.

We used:

Medium clay pot

sheet of burlap

3 packs of seeds that were appropriate for pots

twine

back to school teacher gift

Capri helped me assemble each burlap sheet into the pot and nestle the seeds in the middle.

Capri has mastered her name last year in pre K and she was eager to write her new teacher a sweet note to attach to her gift.

We are so excited for Kinder this year!  Can't wait to see what the year brings!

pin of the week 8-22

I could live in this house for the rest of my life and be so happy.

We were welcomed to the Imanta in Punta Mita earlier this summer with Elderflower juice and it was delish!  This cocktail looked so refreshing and I can't wait to try it and see if it takes me back to our getaway!

A good belly laugh solves any issue.

Oh, the bubble baths and book reading that could happen in this gorgeous bathroom!

If fall looks this fabulous if can come anytime!  This leopard cape might just be everything!

This week's pins are full of randomness but all things gorgeous! I couldn't resist the preciousness of the sweet blue Jolly car.  It's littleness reminds me of a mini ketchup bottle, just small and adorable.

I've always been drawn to the simplicity of black and whites in my wardrobe and find this impossibly chic ensemble just to good.  Simple tank and palazzo pants are just perfection.

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward have the sexiest most beautiful love story!  Paul Newman is one of my all time swoon worthy crushes and what makes him even more delectable is how he loved his wife.  He was quoted saying " I have steak at home, why would I go out for hamburger?"  I know!!! SWOON!

I'm not really familiar with rhubarb but found this strawberry rhubarb cocktail really enticing.  Doesn't it look refreshing and lovely for summer?

My all time favorite ice-cream flavor is mint and when I stumbled upon this gorgeous natural peppermint ice-cream I was sold. Time to try my hand and making some so I can indulge any time I want.

It's my big 30 birthday today and I can't lie and say it feel great and yet I'm in some way mourning the recklessness of the 20's.  I never lived recklessly and to be honest don't feel like I ever would.  But in your 20's if you didn't get it right it was okay because you were young still.  I'm officially a big girl!  I have been living as a big girl for a while now but now it's official!  7 years of marriage and 2 gorgeous babies later the 30's are looking good.  I chopped my hair in search of freshness.  I want to be lighter.  I want to keep my life in perspective and focus on the now instead of the future.  I want to savor and live in the present.  Life is going by so fast in and this next decade I'm planning to fully live this big girl life ahead.  I hope to grow strong, amazing girls and support a beautiful marriage.  I plan to thrive in work and grow in life.  It's up from here.Kacee from Life with Lipstick On   Kacee from Life with Lipstick On Kacee from Life with Lipstick OnKacee from Life with Lipstick OnKacee from Life with Lipstick OnKacee from Life with Lipstick On White has been on the forefront of my closet all summer and when I spotted this white hot jumpsuit it had to be mine! Travel: Top 5 eats at Hotel Del

Food, Travel, UncategorizedLorely MezaComment

hoteldel We just returned from the most fun little mini vacay to San Diego's  Hotel Del Coronado on Corona Island.  We spent five days over the holiday weekend swimming, beaching and eating our body weight in delicious treats. Not only is Hotel Del so uber romantic it's a fabulous family resort full of fun extras for the kiddos. For all our fun check out my Instagram feed for all the goods.  As we arrived, the kids were greeted with fun backpacks full of goodies and sent on a great scavenger hunt around the resort.  Among all the fun activities and the gorgeous amenities, we had some of the yummies dinners, cocktails and treats.  Below is a round up of some of my faves...

1. Waffle cone from Mootime Creamery

Fresh off the press is the best waffle cone ever at Mootime Creamery.  With endless customizable flavors you can build your own decadence.  The girls loved Silly Vanilly which is bubble gum blue and I went crazy for the Chocolate Mint.

2.  Marilyn Martini

The resort is known for it's celeb guests one being the one and only Marilyn Monroe.  One of my all time faves Some Like it Hot was filmed at Hotel Del and so the drink was coined the Marilyn.  I am a sweeter martini drinker but Erik really liked this one.  The Marilyn is made with Nolet's Gin, dry vermouth, orange bitters, lemon twist.  Cheers!

3.  Chilean Sea Bass at SheerWater restaurant

I am a big seafood fan and one of my all time faves is Chilean Sea Bass. At Sheerwater they pan roast the bass in a Lobster sauce and served with butternut squash risotto and oyster mushrooms.  OMG!!!  So decadent!  The rich sauce and risotto are the yummiest compliment to the gorgeous fish.  A must try for fish lovers.

4.  Hibiscus Lemonade Adult Shaved Ice

The temps were starting to rise on the beach and after a morning of boogie boarding and shell collecting it was time for some shaved ice.  Capri opted for a Berrylicious with Monin Wildberry syrup and fresh lemonade.  Erik and I opted for the adult ice. I got the Hibiscus Lemonade  which was made with Bacardi Limon, Lemonade and Monin Hibiscus.  Yum!!  The perfect treat for a hot afternoon of beaching.

5. Chocolate Pecan Crumble

It's gooey and chocolatey and basically what dreams are made of.   Baked in a caste iron boat, the decadent chocolate sauce oozes all over the pecans and creates a rich creamy cake like texture.  The crispy crumble on top ads the perfect amount of texture to balance out the yumminess.

Room renovation

So it's time for a bi girl bed for Peyton.  I loved changing Capri's room over and yet I am having a sad mommy moment over changing over Peyton's .  It's so final. Tears wiped aside, I am working up some great decor to make the little princess super excited about the transition.  I am swooning over tufted headboards, patterned walls and bold color.  I feel like her room should be whimsy, fun and all girly.  Stay tuned for our transformation.  p room 6 image via
